WORCESTER, Mass. — Several local leaders are named to Gov. Maura Healey’s Advisory Council on Black Empowerment.
More than 30 people from across the state will serve, including Alfred Enchill of the Berkshire Black Economic Council; Che Anderson, a vice chancellor at UMass Chan Medical School; Fred Taylor, business agent of a local carpenters union; Dr. Moses Dixon of the Central MA Agency on Aging and Rev. Clyde Talley at the Belmont AME Zion Church in Worcester.
The council will advise Healey and Lt. Gov. Kim Driscoll on issues related to the economic prosperity and wellbeing of Massachusetts Black community, including education, health care and housing.
Taylor is hoping it will help black people get more opportunities.
"For me, it's building generational wealth through construction," Taylor said. I'm there as you know as a representative of the carpenters union and that's a great opportunity for someone to do that, they can enter through the carpenters union or any construction trade as an apprentice and then they can build from that. If they want to build their own business they can have an opportunity to do that and we absolutely open the opportunity to do that."
The governor will sign the executive order to establish the council and appoint the members at the first meeting on Monday.
