State Sen. Anne Gobi (D-Worcester and Hampshire) re-filed legislation which would help homeowners cover the costs for testing and repairing a crumbling foundation of their home.
Homes with concrete containing a mineral called pyrrohotite are must susceptible. It's believed to have come from a quarry in Connecticut but there may be others in Massachusetts.
Gobi said she's meeting with MassDOT and their engineers next week to see if they can help with testing quarries.
"We need to find out where the material is coming from so it's not getting into people's foundations," Gobi said. "No one is to blame for it, but now that we know it exists, we need to put a stop to it and find a way to get some reimbursement for the people who have put out a lof of money, in some cases over a quarter of a million dollars, to save their homes."
Homeowners insurance does not cover the cost of repairing a foundation, and the only way to fix a crumbling one is to replace it.
