PITTSFIELD, Mass. - Central Berkshire Habitat for Humanity is providing free income tax assistance for residents in their area.

They help about 650 Berkshire County residents file returns annually and their goal is 750 clients this year. Their free Volunteer Income Tax Assistance service is seeing an increase in drop-offs this week as people start to gather their tax forms. Eligible households include families with a gross income of $60,000 or less, people with disabilities, the elderly, and limited English-language speakers.

Director of Impact and Programs Beth Frederick said during her eight years with the program she's seen Habitat for Humanity build relationships with residents.

“I get to see some of the same people every year," Frederick said. "They're just so appreciative that they're not having to pay for this service and they feel confident that when our volunteers are talking to them, they're giving the good information, they're reviewing things. They're very kind. They're very gentle.

"It's, you know, people get nervous about taxes, but when they come here, I feel like they're comforted, and they feel comfortable with what our service gives them.”

Frederick said the organization is thankful for their volunteers for making the service possible. The tax filing deadline this year is April 18.
