WORCESTER, Mass. - The weekend's record breaking cold forced nearly 200 elderly people out of their homes in Worcester.

A pipe burst at the Worcester Housing Authority's Elm Park Tower on Pleasant Street.

The 16-story building is senior-only housing.

The building experienced pipes freezing, power outages, and major flooding Saturday.

CEO Alex Corrales said they're finishing up cleaning but it's been a challenge to find vendors who can assess the damage to the various systems in the building.

"Our fire alarm system, our electrical system sprinkler system, trying to get vendors to come in as soon as possible to assess them so we have a better understanding of when we are able to have the residents back into their units and the building fully restored,” said Corrales. “I think unfortunately we’ve seen a lot of different people and companies and businesses that are in the same boat as us with the pipes freezing so trying to get vendors into our building has been a little bit of a challenge."

The residents are staying in a hotel or with family.

Corrales said they're hopeful to have residents back in their units by Wednesday or Thursday but are planning for a longer stay if needed.
