OXFORD, Mass. - It may be January, but how about a swim?
A few people in a Central Massachusetts town took the Polar Plunge Saturday morning. The freezing dip in Carbuncle Pond was part of the town's second annual Winter Festival. Even though there was a blanket of snow on the ground, more than 30 people still put on their bathing suits for the plunge. Groups of 10 or less then ran into the water. Organizers say last year the pond was actually frozen, and they had to cut a hole in it in order to jump in.
We were able to catch up with organizers, as well as some of the people who hopped into the cold water. Many say it was on their bucket list.
"It's wonderful to be part of this. In the fall of 2021, we conceived it to do the first one in 2022," said Shelley Lambert, director of the Oxford Community Center. "Really, we had low expectations and last year's event exceeded expectations. We expect that to happen every year."
"It went great," said September Forbes, who took part in the plunge." It was on my bucket list. It was really cold but it was invigorating. And two minutes after you're out, you're hot."
"Pretty cold at first," joked Gage Sposato. "But, once we got out, kind of warmed up real quick. Quite the experience."
"I went fully in," said participant Drew Nieber. "I went under the water. It was really cold."
"It was freezing but worth the cause," said Kristina McGuinness. "When asked if she had done anything like this before, she responded with, "Absolutely not, and not again."
"That was a great experience," said Kyle Cloutier, who also hopped in the water.
Some participants raised money in an effort to support the Special Olympics. They hope to raise $1,000.
Those brave enough to hop in the water were able to warm up with some hot cocoa.
