State Rep. Michael Soter (R-Worcester) is pushing to get the social media app TikTok banned from government devices in the state.

Soter filed a bill to ban TikTok from state, local and county government devices. It's very similar to the bill recently passed at the federal level.

Soter said TikTok's parent company Byte Dance can't be trusted. If made law, the bill would not impact a private resident from downloading the app and using it. He said the goal is to protect the state from possible security risks.

"The Chinese government really doesn't want to cooperate," Soter said. "We cooperate with Facebook and Twitter. I'm all for it, I hope my colleagues join me. I hope I see more folks giving me calls. I'm getting very few call from people saying I don't understand, but I'm getting more saying its about time to take a stand."

Soter said other states like New Hampshire, Utah and South Dakota issued similar executive orders. He is asking for the bill to be taken up right away to get it to Gov. Maura Healey as soon as possible.
