WORCESTER, Mass. - Spectrum News One spoke with a local EMT who explained how keeping calm and being prepared can make all the difference in an emergency.

Vital Emergency Medical Services said EMTs are at all sporting events in Massachusetts to ensure not only the athletes' safety, but fans' as well. And while their work may sometimes go unnoticed, months of training prepare them for the unthinkable.

"The important thing is for extremely fast, early and high quality CPR and defibrillation so that's the whole point of the process” said EMT Randy Rameau. “That's why you can't have a middle school or high school football game without an EMT being present. The important aspect is early notification, early recognition, early high quality CPR."

The staff at Vital Emergency Medical Services said it's important for everyone to get CPR certified when they can, because regardless of whether a situation happens on the field, in a classroom or somewhere else, having someone there who knows what to do could be the difference between life and death.
