WORCESTER, Mass. - For 36 years now, Sharfmans Jewelers has made a new ornament showcasing one of Worcester's greatest landmarks.

"It started back in 1986 with Elm Park," Sharfmans employee Mark Fitzpatrick said. "We've always picked iconic locations or buildings in Worcester that have a lot of sentimental meaning."

Each holiday decoration is unique to the heart of the commonwealth. Their ornament for this year was the Hanover Theatre.

"The Centrum, when it was The Centrum, the airport, the oval ice skating rink," Fitzpatrick said, giving examples of past years' designs. "The triple decker, which was one of the most popular ones. Elwood Adams, Coney Island Hot Dogs, the list goes on and on"."

So how do they pick the season's ornament? Well, there's really no formula behind it. Last year, their Polar Park design was a big hit.

"Polar Park was the one that was most sold last year," Fitzpatrick said. "Some of them really created quite a stir, such as the Burnside fountain, the turtle boy was a lot of fun."

Now these small pieces of Worcester's history hang on the Christmas trees of families every year.

"They are kind of excited," Fitzpatrick said. "It's a local thing. It's part of the city, so its been really a great experience."

As the city grows, Sharfmans said they plan to keep finding the gems important to the people of Worcester and turn them into something they can cherish forever.
