ALFORD, Mass. - The MSPCA said it's safely relocated 18 horses after receiving a complaint about animal cruelty.
The MSPCA found 18 horses at a property in Alford, a small town in Berkshire County. Five trailers helped rescue them as part of what the MSPCA calls the "largest single surrender of horses in at least the last five years." The horses arrived at Nevins Farm in Methuen earlier this week.
MSPCA director Michael Keiley said some have a contagious respiratory illness and all will need to be quarantined for at least 21 days. He said it’s a big undertaking for them and they’re looking for the public's help in any way possible.
"This is a massive undertaking for our organization," Keiley said. "It is going to take a ton of resources that were already stretched thin on. We really need the support of the community to help us deal with this case financially and general support until we can get to a point when these animals can get adopted and then we'll need adopters to step up and take on some of these incredible horses who will make great companions once they have that opportunity."
The MSPCA had to relocate 10 other horses they were caring for at the farm to make room for the 18 horses. Keiley said he doesn’t know when these horses will be able to be put up for adoption.
