WORCESTER, Mass. - The Worcester County St. Patrick's Parade Committee named Gordon Hargrove, retired executive director of the Friendly House, as its grand marshal for next year's parade.

"Well, it certainly is a great honor," Hargrove said. "But I wish it could be shared with the literally thousands of young people that have marched with us over the years in the parade. On behalf of everyone over the years who have marched with us, who have performed, who have done so many things, I accept the honor."

Hargrove began his career at the Friendly House 65 years ago as a youth leader. He was appointed executive director in 1968 and served in the position for more than 50 years. During his time there, the budget has grown from $23,000 to $6 million.

Hargrove also served two years in the Army and four years in the National Guard. The committee said they chose him because of his dedication to the community.

"Gordon recently retired, and we figured what better way to honor him," said committee chairwoman Erin Zamarro. "He has been a long-time supporter of the parade and the vote to have Gordon as grand marshal was unanimous."

This will be the parade's 41st year. This past year, Worcester medical director Dr. Michael Hirsh and former city manager Ed Augustus serves as co-grand marshals.
