Experts are saying Thanksgiving travel is going to be as busy as ever this year, so ahead of Thanksgiving, our Dan Reidy made the trip east about 100 miles from the Spectrum News office in Pittsfield to our station in Worcester.

What You Need To Know

  • This year is expected to be the the third busiest year for Thanksgiving travel since AAA started tracking travel numbers in 2000

  • AAA defines the Thanksgiving travel period as the five days between Wednesday, November 23 to Sunday, November 27

  • Our Dan Reidy made the trip from Berkshire to Worcester County and caught up with some travelers to talk about where they’re headed

The trip usually takes about an hour and 45 minutes. We added some time by pulling into a couple stops along the way. Traveler Doug Ross said the Blandford Plaza is a favorite spot for his dog Mack.

“We’ve been here before," Ross said. "My niece actually lives near here and this is a good stop for us.”

When asked what he was looking forward to this Thanksgiving, Ross said he's excited about spending time with loved ones.

“Just being with family and friends," Ross said, "Having some good meals and Connecticut’s beautiful so we’re looking forward to that.”

Speaking of food, the Charlton Plaza saw a lot of travelers stopping for a quick bite. We asked around for favorite Thanksgiving dishes. Travelers mentioned stuffing, gravy and dessert.

Jennifer Beckley said it's more important than ever to be with her family for the holiday. She’s making the long trip to Nashville to honor a nephew who died just last week.

“We’re so thankful that he had the opportunity to be in our life and in our family," Beckley said. "So we’re just getting it all together and you know, this is going to be truly a wonderful and truly a thankful Thanksgiving.”

All the drivers we met said despite some congestion, their trips have all been pretty easy. The trip to the station took a little less than 2 hours of driving time.

To avoid the worst of the traffic, AAA recommends driving during off-peak travel times if your schedule allows.
