GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass. - Organizations in the Berkshires are coming together to host a short film screening and a conversation about youth mental health and suicide prevention on Sunday.

What You Need To Know

  • Berkshire International Film Festival and the Austen Riggs Center are presenting a film screening and conversation around youth mental illness

  • The event is Sunday, November 20 at 3 p.m. at the Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center in Great Barrington

  • According to the CDC, 37% of high school students in the U.S. reported experiencing poor mental health in 2021

“What we’re finding is that children and adolescents are re-entering school, and in addition to dealing with all the normal developmental things like trying to do well in school, trying to navigate peer relationships, they’re also still just dealing with a lot of uncertainty and anxiety around re-emerging into normal everyday life,” said Katie Lewis, director of research at the Austen Riggs Center.

Lewis said the 'Shine the Light' event is going to look at how youth and adolescents are doing in terms of their mental health and resilience. The day will also highlight local resources and the work organizations like the Berkshire Coalition for Suicide Prevention are doing to support young people.

Lewis said the panel discussion accompanying the screening will feature a wide range of voices.

“I think it’s so wonderful that we’re including such a diverse range of voices and perspectives on youth mental health," Lewis said. "We have members from the community, members from the lay-public, members from the mental health community locally, and then, of course, Eric Ewers' voice and his perspective as a film maker who has gone through interviewing young people who have gone through really serious mental health issues. And so, I think the synergy between these different voices will be really valuable and offer a range of perspectives.”

The 'Shine the Light' event is open to the public and it’s free for anyone 18-years old and younger. Tickets can be found online through the Berkshire International Film Festival or the Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center’s websites.
