WORCESTER, Mass. - The city of Worcester is making preparations for the wind and rain from Tropical Storm Nicole that is expected to arrive this weekend.

Nicole made landfall on the east coast of Florida as a Category 1 hurricane Thursday morning and has since weakened to a tropical storm.

Worcester DPW commissioner Jay Fink said any forecast with more than one to two inches of rain is something they need to prepare for. Crews are spending the week looking at the water levels of local steams and culverts and making sure drains throughout the city are clear.

"On the day of, we will have staff present that will be responding to flooding complaints, and we do get flooding complaints," Fink said. "It's just the nature of where we are in the fall, heavy rain, it's going to happen, it all depends on the track of the storm. We are going to keep watching up until Saturday when it's expected to come in."

Fall leaf collection is underway in the city, so Fink also reminded residents to make sure storm drains are clear of any leaves or branches ahead of the storm.
