NAPLES, Fla. - The Salvation Army of Collier County is supporting people in the aftermath of Hurricane Ian from Sarasota down to Naples.

Captain Ben Bridges said unlike other parts of the state, Naples didn't experience a lot of wind damage. Instead, people are dealing with heavy storm surge damage, which ruined belongings inside homes.

Throughout southwest Florida, Bridges said they've served about 23,00 meals since the storm hit.

"Here in Naples alone we are doing about 2,500 meals a day," Bridges said. "We are finding where the people are, so we aren't requiring them to come back, we are going to go to them. A lot of them you know, that storm surge took out their cars as well, so they have no transportation.

"When you go out and you talk to people in the community, you see often when we first arrive it's just utter hopelessness. People that are left with literally with nothing faced with trying to take another step and it can be really really difficult. "

Bridges said power has been restored to about 95 percent of households in Naples. The Salvation Army anticipates a long-term recovery response lasting months and possibly even years.
