FORT MYERS, Fla. - A central Massachusetts family who owns a home in Fort Myers, Florida is considering themselves to be pretty lucky in the aftermath of Hurricane Ian.

Karen Hastie-Wilson, who is the mother of Spectrum News 1's executive producer, said as soon as she heard a hurricane was coming she booked a hotel on the eastern side of the state.

Hastie-Wilson said when she and her husband were driving back to their house in Fort Myers on Saturday and saw the damage nearby, they didn't know what to expect at home.

"We were lucky," Hastie-Wilson said. "We had about two inches of sludge so we're working on trying to clean that up. We have a lot of vegetation down, a lot of stuff to clean up. But we have a house, we have a roof over our heads. You'll see in some of the pictures I’m sending, some people don't have that. So we are very fortunate, very grateful."

The Wilsons are still without power, but they do have water. Portable cell phone towers are set up in the area so people can contact their family and friends.
