WEBSTER, Mass. - Webster Police Chief Michael Shaw is back on the job after spending 10 weeks at the FBI's National Academy.
He applied back in 2015 when he was a iieutenant with the department. He received notification that he was accepted in March, and said it's an honor to have been selected as only about 1 percent of all law enforcement members who apply are picked to go.
The FBI runs three or four sessions a year with about 250 law enforcement members from all over the world in each class. The combination of graduate and undergraduate classes are coordinated through the University of Virginia and are on all topics geared towards law enforcement executives including crisis intervention, emotional intelligence and national security.
Shaw said one big takeaway from the program was the officer wellness category.
"Everything that police across the world, around the world face nowadays, their well-being is now more than ever more critical to make sure they are in a good place and they are able to do their jobs," Shaw said. "It reinforced the fact that I knew we were on the right track but I also came away with some ideas there that we could maybe make some small tweaks to make it even better and to make our place even better to serve no only our officers but our community as well."
Shaw said his goal is to send more law enforcement officers from Webster to the academy in the future.
