WORCESTER, Mass. - Saturday was a beautiful day for a run, and it's exactly what happened in Worcester's Canal District as the annual Canal Diggers 5K kicked off.
More than 600 people laced up their shoes and hit the pavement this year to raise funds for local charities. The race was sponsored by Fallon Health and started at Polar Park.
The race was originally a way to pay tribute to the Irish immigrants who helped build the canal, and is now a way to celebrate Irish pride.
Fallon says race proceeds will go to three organizations making a meaningful difference in the lives of those they serve. They include Pernet Family Health Service, Notre Dame Health Care, and Meals on Wheels - Elder Services of Worcester area.
"This is our favorite day of the year," said race co-director Brendan Moran. "Weather-wise, it could not be more perfect for running. Maybe it's a little hot, but it's great to bring people out. Particularly, you know, after the last couple of years. This is our second time being back outside since COVID but our numbers certainly haven't been like this in years. It's really nice to see people out today, bring people down to the Canal District and celebrate all that's been done down here over the last 15 years."
This is the 16th year of the race. The 5K is also used as a way to promote local businesses in the Canal District. Once racers passed the finish line, they were treated with some live entertainment from 80's cover band The Flock.
