WORCESTER, Mass. - Worcester Public Schools is running its own transportation this year, and the school buses have a lot of new features to ensure safety and reliability on the roads.
The district ordered 100 new buses to gather students on 74 routes to begin the year. Michael Freeman, the district's assistant transportation director, said some of the new added features include collision mitigation, lane assist and a speed monitor which automatically reduces the driver's speed if they go over the speed limit.
While the school year just begun Monday, Freeman said plans are already in the works to replace 13 buses whose leases will be up at the end of the year.
"When those leases are up, we are going to be transitioning into propane and that will be our first step into alternative fuels," said Freeman. "So next year we will have 13 new propane buses and then we are working on maybe getting an electric bus too."
Freeman said in order to get an electric bus, the district has to build infrastructure to support it first.
