STERLING, Mass. - Davis Farmland's Mega Maze has grown a reputation as one of the best corn mazes in the country, but this year, the twists and turns started long before opening day.
What You Need To Know
- Davis Farmland is working to have its Mega Maze ready for the first weekend of October
- In June, the farm's twin turbo slides and the surrounding area burned in a suspicious fire
- Crews have rebuilt the slide and are battling drought to grow the corn for opening day
- Police are still investigating the fire, but no arrests have been made
In the early morning hours of June 21, Davis Farmland's twin turbo slides burned in what was later deemed a suspicious fire.
"It's just been a crazy time trying to pull this all together," co-owner Larry Davis said. "The combination of the fire, the drought, everything else."
Because the slides were right on the edge of the cornfield, it put the entire maze in jeopardy. A portion of it was considered the site of an ongoing investigation.
"We had to get clearance to be able to rebuild," Davis said. "Then, there was the question of what evidence might be out in the field."
Eventually, permission was granted. The delays have set opening day back until the beginning of October, but Davis said it's worth it to rebuild the slides and craft a maze that lives up to the farm's standards.
"It is taking a tremendous amount of time, but if we have to work 24/7, we will have that bad boy open," Davis said. "The corn was only planted a month ago, and you can see behind me it looks fantastic. You would think it would not have grown at all, but it’s extremely green."
Davis said the police have some leads in their investigation of the fire, but no arrests have been made.
He's urging everyone to stop by the Mega Maze, which will be open every Saturday and Sunday throughout October.
"We're currently working with our chefs to come up with some fabulous fall foods that everybody will enjoy," Davis said. "We have a ton of tents filled with different types of food, and we also have live music."
