WORCESTER, Mass. - When the WooSox announced their move to Worcester four years ago, the fans overwhelmingly chose the name 'Red Sox' for the team name.

However, for two games in the 2023 season, the team will adopt two of the nickname runner-ups for a night. Team president Dr. Charles Steinberg offered a sneak peak into the two monikers will be featured on their "What If' nights next year.

"Back in 2018 after we committed to come here, we started compiling all the suggestions from people of what the nickname of the Worcester Red Sox should be and people may remember that we had 218 suggestions," said Steinberg. "Nobody beat the WooSox. What if we had chosen one of the runners up?

"Two of those have consistently either gotten laughs or made it to the finals. One with historical reference, the 1880 Worcester Worcesters were referred to as the Worcester Ruby Legs. What if we had given some more spotlight to that funny word worm that is associated by some with Worcester? And what if we had been as some people suggested the Wicked Worms?

"It's designed to give children something to giggle about and maybe have grandparents explain to grandchildren where does this Wicked Worm concept come from, where do the Ruby Legs come from and just foster some communication."
