HOLDEN, Mass. - Around 6 a.m. Monday, the Holden Fire Department responded to a brush fire deep in the woods off of Harris Street.

According to Fire Chief Russ Hall, they suspect the fire has been going for a few days.

Hall said the fire consumed a few acres, and the conditions have made fighting the flames difficult.

"They're facing tough conditions," said Hall of the firefighters battling the blaze. "Hilly conditions, wooded conditions, deal with the environmental impact, the heat, stuff like that. Becomes difficult and the terrain is difficult to traverse. We have to dig, and we have to rake, it's not just visible fire that we're going after."

Five towns responed to the brush fire. Hall said Holden Fire will be checking the scene for a few days to monitor any flare ups.

This is the second brush fire in central Massachusetts in as many weeks, as the Auburn Fire Department responded to a brush fire in town last Tuesday.
