WORCESTER, Mass. - The Worcester Redevelopment Authority voted Monday to buy the historic Denholm building downtown.

In Monday's meeting, the WRA authorized a $3 million purchase and sale agreement for the Main Street location.

In April, the Worcester City Council voted to authorize a larger loan to buy the property, which included enough money to cover the costs of the potential demolition of the building and relocation fees to current tenants. The WRA can officially ask current tenants to leave after 4 months of closing on the property.

The city's chief development officer Peter Dunn said they plan to take bids from interested developers this fall.

"We can bring in the draft request for proposals for the board's review and discussion before we release that for bids," said Dunn during the meeting Monday morning. "We do know through some informal conversations there is bona fide interest in the site so that's a good thing. It was really something we wanted to know before getting to this stage because it's not our intention to hold the property long term."

Dunn said they're working on the closing and it's possible it could happen by the end of this week or next week.
