It was a big afternoon for the Shrewsbury Post 397 American Legion baseball team as they won the Northeast regional championship Sunday, beating Upper Deck Post 14 from Rhode Island 4-2.
With the win at Fitton Field, Shrewsbury advances to the American Legion World Series in Shelby, North Carolina.
Parents of the players were excited to see them so close to playing in the World Series.
"It's great," said parent Mark McManus. "They put together a terrific event and make sure all the teams are going to have a good time and compete. It's all about playing clean baseball and the Shrewsbury team has done an excellent job of making that happen."
"It has been such a great and exciting week," parent Carrie Amero said. "The team has really come together. They're playing their hearts out and they want this real bad."
"I would say it hasn't been nerve-wracking," said parent Mark Gardner. "These kids have been rolling all tournament long. We've had a few hiccups, but they've overcome all the adversity we've had along the way."
