HULL, Mass. - About 90 minutes east of central Massachusetts and up to three hours from the western part of the state is the little coastal town of Hull. Although it's one of the smallest towns in the state, it offers plenty to do on hot summer days.

"Hull is the perfect day trip because it truly has something for everybody" said Jennifer Constable, chair of the Hull Select Board.

What You Need To Know

  • Although Hull is a small town, it offers plenty to do in the summer

  • Hull is best known for Nantasket Beach, but also offers many restaurants and other activities

  • There's also the historic Paragon Carousel, made for the town in 1928

Located on a peninsula, Hull is probably best known for it's beach, Nantasket. But if sand and water isn't for you, Constable said there are various restaurants and other activities you can fill your day with.

"Visit the arcade or play mini golf," said Constable. "If you're into history you can take a trip to Fort Revere which is a fort that protected Boston Harbor all the way through World War 2 and has panoramic view of Boston Harbor, Boston, Hull and just the open ocean."

Another standing piece of Hull History is the carousel, which was made specifically for Paragon Park in 1928. Paragon Park was an amusement park in the town that was open from 1905-1984. When it was sold in 1985 by owner Larry Stone to a developer, there was one thing he made them promise.

"Larry said the one thing I want you to do is promise that the carousel stays, because that's the soul of paragon park and the developer promised," said Mary Schleiff, president of the Friends of Paragon Carousel.

Today it's operated and preserved by the Friends Of The Paragon Carousel non-profit, which raises money by running a Paragon Park museum, an ice cream shop and by collecting donations. They even allow riders to adopt one of the iconic horses to help keep them in good shape.

"Each horse, approximately $10,000 to restore a horse," said Schleiff. "Of course the price keeps going up. We have a program called adopt a horse. All of the horses have been adopted this year, you can adopt a horse for the season for $500 dollars and you give the horse a name or you can adopt a horse forever."

So whether you spend the entire day sitting in the sun, exploring New England history or win a round of mini golf, there's something for everyone.

"Hull truly is an easy day trip," said Constable. "You can come for the day, you can stay for the weekend it honestly is for families or individuals of all ages."
