WORCESTER, Mass. - Bike riders on Sunday saw how fast they could pedal up a two-block hill in downtown Worcester.
The 500-foot hill on George Street is a quad-buster and is the same spot world champion, Major Taylor, used to train. One at a time, riders faced the clock, pedaling uphill as fast as they could. Organizers said the bike challenge is like Mount Everest for cyclists. More than 100 people took on the steep hill, even in the heat.
"You could only have this in Worcester," Lynne Tolman, president of the Major Taylor Association, said. "I'm going to borrow a slogan from somebody else's Worcester blog - so Worcester it hurts. Where else do you have a city with this many hills and hills like this? So this in unique to Worcester."
Riders ranged from 14 to 70 years old. Money raised from the event goes to the Major Taylor Association.
