PITTSFIELD, Mass. - Each Thursday, the WTBR Community Radio studio is transformed into a dance party as Martha Escobar and her daughter Deisy host their weekly radio show, Mundo Latino.

"Don't be afraid because we are bilingual,” said Deisy to her audience at the beginning of the show. “You'll hear some English and some Español, but everyone here is welcome."

What You Need To Know

  • Martha Escobar and her daughter Deisy host the Mundo Latino radio show on WTBR

  • The show features a mix of Latino and American music

  • They also keep listeners informed with news in English and Spanish

  • They’ve hosted the show together for nine years and it’s helped them grow closer together

Throughout the two hour show, listeners will hear a mix of Latino and American music. But what they don't get to see is Martha and Deisy singing and dancing along in the studio.

"We like to keep our roots alive through the music,” said Martha. “Because the music is a very important thing for us, for the Latino community."

They also keep everyone informed by reading the news in both English and Spanish and occasionally bringing on guests to talk about important services available in the area.

As an immigrant from Colombia herself, Martha knows the importance of helping new immigrants understand their community.

"We try to make life easier for the people who just came,” said Martha. “We try to let them know we have a space, we have a voice in the Berkshires."

Deisy first came on the show when she was just eight, and in the nine years since, they both feel the experience has brought them closer together.

"My mom really just pushes me out of my comfort zone,” said Deisy. “She encourages me, and she's been a mentor throughout all this process and she's helped me really come out of my shell."

"It's a unique experience to see how passionate she is to help people,” said Martha. “We share the same passion."
