WORCESTER, Mass. - The Jewish Federation of Central Massachusetts honored Worcester police chief Steven Sargent on Tuesday for his service.

The Jewish Federation presented Chief Sargent with the Righteous Gentile Humanitarian award at a ceremony at the Jewish Community Center.

The award recognizes a community leader who has done service for the greater community in a meaningful and significant way.

The Jewish Federation said Chief Sargent is a perfect example of someone who is not only supportive of the Jewish community, but all faith-based communities. 

“The chief was an obvious choice when we were looking through the nominations,” Steven Schimmel, executive director of the JFCA, said. “The work that he’s done on behalf of faith-based communities in our city has been an example of the very best of community policing.”

The award also comes with $10,000. which Chief Sargent said he will donate to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and the Manny 267 Foundation.
