WORCESTER, Mass. - The Worcester Bravehearts welcomed 3,000 students from around central Massachusetts to their game against the Nashua Silver Knights on Tuesday.

It’s part of the Bravehearts “Baseball in Education” days.

The students won’t just be watching the game, but also taking part in it through a “You Choose the Rules Game."

The teams will play by a new rule every inning which was chosen by a student in the community, including if a fan catches a foul ball, it counts as an out, if a batter strikes out, they get pied in the face and the team manager must eat a hot dog every time his team allows a run.

During the entire game, fielders must slap high five with opposing players who get a hit and reach base safely to promote sportsmanship.

Bravehearts general manager Dave Peterson said this is a fun way to get students involved in the game.

“We’ve got 3,000 screaming kids behind us here that have basically set this as their end of the school year field trip.  These two field trip days have always been a staple of what we do here,” Peterson said. “In terms of what we do is we provide lunches for all the kids, we provide hats and then we also help with many of these Worcester Public Schools in terms of providing funding for their school buses so that these kids have come out here. And for a lot of them it could be the highlight of their summer”

The Bravehearts are welcoming more students on Wednesday with a new set of rules, in their game against the Norwich Sea Unicorns.

Both games will have two-hour time limits and will end in a home run derby.
