MASS. - Attorney General Maura Healey’s office is warning people of potential scams that may arise because of the baby formula shortage.

The AG’s Office is encouraging customers to shop for formula at trusted retailers and if you’re buying from an unknown source, search the company’s name online or call your pediatrician to see if they have the formula in stock.

Congressional representative Jim McGovern (D-MA) said families should see some relief soon, as President Joe Biden invoked the defense production act to step up domestic production. However, McGovern said, they need to find out how this happened in this first place and never let it happen again.

“Part of it is corporate greed. We only have four companies that do baby formula in this country and we have one of them, Abbott, that provides the lion's share of baby formula. (Abbott) was, quite frankly, producing contaminated formula where babies died,” McGovern said. “We had an FDA that was too slow to react, doesn’t have enough inspectors to be able to move forward more quickly to ensure the safety of baby formula.”

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health said anyone having trouble finding formula should consult with their pediatrician before making changes to their baby’s diet. The DPH said during this time, families should not attempt to make their own formula, water it down or use anything recalled or expired.
