WORCESTER, Mass. - Bancroft School in Worcester is honoring the career of a longtime coach and teacher.

Jane Gerhardt is retiring after 42 years of teaching physical education, as well as coaching field hockey and softball.

She said the Bancroft community has always felt like a family to her. Both of her kids also went to the school. Coach Gerhardt said she's proud of the many wins and championships she's been a part of. She said she's thankful for the great memories and relationships she's made over the years.

"I like to say I've grown up here. I've learned a lot along the way from a lot of really good people here at Bancroft who have taught me and mentored me as I've gone through the years," Gerhardt said. "The physical education department and athletic department has been family to me. The best thing is the kids for sure."

"I'm really going to miss her but I'm really happy we're going together," Bancroft softball player Brooke Husson said. "I think growing up with her has been like the best thing ever. She's been such a great mentor. I'm kind of scared to move on without her but I know I'll still be in touch with her after."

Gerhardt said with a couple of weeks left in school, the thought of retiring isn't fully sinking in yet.
