WORCESTER, Mass. - A Worcester city councilor is worried the condition of a local middle school isn’t right for students and their learning.

District 3 city councilor George Russell is asking City Manager Ed Augustus to come up with a capital improvement plan for East Middle School.

Specifically, Russell is looking for the city to install safe and energy efficient windows. Russell said he understands the building is old, but students and staff deserve to learn and teach in better conditions.

“When you walk in, you see, besides the flaking chipping paint, you see windows that are mostly covered with sheets of plastic to stop the weather from coming through,” Russell said. “The students and faculty in the school deserve better conditions than having a sheet of plastic hanging from the windows in the classroom.”

Russell is also asking the city for a report of air quality safety and energy conditions currently in the building.
