PITTSFIELD, Mass. - The Vietnam memorial mural on West Housatonic Street is over 30 years old and deteriorating, but now there’s an effort among several local organizations to preserve it.

Pittsfield’s office of cultural development is working with veterans’ groups to come up with a plan to recreate and move the mural.

After over three decades of being exposed to the elements, the mural, titled ‘Lest We Forget,’ is faded and has lost much of its color. It depicts 26 servicemen from Berkshire County who were killed in action in Vietnam.

Cultural development director Jennifer Glockner said her office works closely with local veterans to make sure the recreation stays true to the original.

“A lot of the Vietnam veterans community were there for the installation of the original mural,” said Glockner. “So they have thoughts and particular memories of how it was installed and how it was drawn and the artistic integrity of it. We really want to honor all of those opinions.”

Glockner said they’re still waiting for the last piece of funding for the project to be approved by the community preservation committee. Once it is, she hopes they will install the new mural sometime this summer.
