WORCESTER, Mass. - The “Heart of the Commonwealth” has a long rich history and with that comes plenty of unique features that make the city special, including Worcester’s

Jay Fink, Worcester’s Department of Public Works and Parks commissioner, said to his knowledge Sargent Street is the only cobblestone road left in the city. Sargent Street runs between Lamartine Street and Southbridge Street.

The reason they have been phased out over the years is because they are very difficult to maintain, especially in the winter months, and are also difficult for pedestrians and people in wheelchairs to use.

Fink said while there might only be one left in the city, that was not the case years ago.

“The majority of the streets back 100 years ago were cobblestone. The material is granite. It’s indestructible,” Fink said. “In the day, that’s what they built the streets out of. In some cases, the cobblestone is still there. In some cases, over the years, it’s just been paid over.”

Fink added that while a cobblestone road is difficult to maintain with just one in the city, it is a benefit to preserve the charm of the neighborhood
