WORCESTER, Mass. - The Worcester License Commission has suspended operations at Hurricane Betty’s for 10 days.

The establishment will only need to serve the suspension for five days. If they incur another violation within the next year, Hurricane Betty’s will have its license suspended an additional five days.

The Commission met in a special meeting Wednesday to visit Hurricane Betty’s strip club at 350 Southbridge Street and then met with representatives for JOLO, Inc., dba Hurricane Betty’s.

The suspension of the license comes after a 27-year-old man was shot and killed near the club early Saturday morning. A 32-year-old man was also shot and, according to Worcester Police, remains in the hospital as of Wednesday being treated for life-threatening injuries.

Hurricane Betty’s management said there was a paid police detail and up to five additional security members on site at the time of the shooting.

Worcester police Sgt. Thomas Needham said the club’s violation falls under rule 14 of rules and regulations of Worcester License Commission, which states that managers are responsible for all violations in the presence whether they’re present or not.

The Commission recommended Hurricane Betty’s get a metal detector, upgrade camera systems and position them to entrance and exits, close off access to the rear patio area, maintain a paid police detail seven nights a week from 11 p.m. to 3 a.m. and invest in an ID scanner. Hurricane Betty’s will have five days to meet these requirements.

The license suspension will start immediately.

Police continue to investigate the shootings and ask the public to contact the WPD Detective Bureau at (508) 799-8651 if you have any information.
