A Westborough police officer was recognized for saving two lives in his short time on the department.

Worcester County District Attorney Joseph Early Jr. awarded Police Officer John Sweeney the TEAM Award for his actions.

On Jan. 5, Sweeney helped save a 48-year-old man from choking.

And on Feb. 2, he performed livesaving CPR once again, this time on a 6-month-old baby who wasn't breathing.

"I immediately gave the child over to the paramedics and jumped out of the ambulance almost tripping” said Sweeney, recounting the day. “Just pure joy, you know? The father gave me a hug and a handshake, it was a great feeling. I got young kids myself, and I’m just very happy to help out,” said Sweeney.

Sweeney joined the department in the summer of 2021.

He's the second Westborough officer to be honored by the DA’s office.

Sgt. Jon Kalagher received the award in 2020 for saving a woman during a domestic violence call in November 2019.
