WORCESTER, Mass. - A Worcester city councilor is looking into more ways to help the homeless population.
Councilor at-Large Thu Nguyen says icy, cold days like Friday, show the need for more places in Worcester where people find shelter from the elements.
Right now, there are only two locations used in the city as warming and cooling centers and they are both downtown.
Nguyen said they are working to end the stigma around homelessness and create spaces in the city, where people can feel safe.
"This year has shown us how many days even our Worcester Public Schools had to close because it's freezing,” Nguyen said in an interview on Friday. “We are thinking about homeless folks who are just out in the streets and so thinking about a place where they can actually feel safe and treated with dignity is really important to me."
Nguyen said an order they filed earlier this week asking City Manager Ed Augustus to create a report about the possibility of more centers was supported by most of the City Council. District 5 councilor Etel Haxhiaj, District 4 councilor Sarai Rivera and District 2 councilor Candy Mero-Carlson all signed onto the item.
