WORCESTER, Mass. - General spectators aren’t allowed at Worcester Public Schools sporting events until Feb. 19, even though schools districts outside of Worcester have loosened restrictions.

WPS announced Sunday on Facebook that parents, caretakers and siblings are still the only fans allowed at athletic events. They put the restriction in place on Jan. 3. WPS cited the current 25% COVID-19 positivity rate in Worcester schools as the reason for limiting fans.

Worcester school committee member Molly McCullough is asking the district to reconsider this ban because she believes Worcester can safely have fans in attendance like other districts.

“I’m just a little concerned that it’s possible that we could do so safely. Prior to that, based on the leagues that we play currently in the 30 plus surrounding towns that all lifted on Friday,” McCullough said. “Our fans would be able to attend games at those locations, they just wouldn’t be able to attend games at our locations, so to me it’s a little bit of an inconsistent prevention method.”

McCullough said it will be the superintendent’s decision when to lift the ban since it falls under day-to-day operations.
