MASS. - Governor Charlie Baker will give his final State of the Commonwealth address on Tuesday evening.

Holy Cross professor Alex Hindman says a portion of the speech will look back on the thing’s he and Lt. Gov. Karyn Polito have accomplished.

While Baker is not seeking re-election, Hindman says there are a few things he still wants to put on the table, including refiling legislation on criminal justice laws, a revenge porn law and dealing with marijuana impaired driving.

Hindman said the fight against the coronavirus will also likely be a big theme.

Hindman said Baker’s background as a healthcare executive fit the moment in a way many didn’t expect when first electing him Gov. in 2014 and again in 2018.

“I mean, I think when you stand back from (Gov. Baker), he’s not the national Republican, so he sort of fits this blue state,” Hindman said. “There’s nearly a little over a 3 to 1 Democrat to Republican registration margin in Massachusetts and in November he had 56% approval ratings, so there is a lot of Democrats that he even brought on board with this stable view of how we address the pandemic, what we need to do, it was sort of matter of fact.”

Hindman says Baker has been popular in statewide office here, so the natural inclination would be to consider him for a senate run in the future, but says he could also see him going in a different direction and not running as well.

You can watch the address live on Spectrum News 1 and on the Spectrum News 1 app. Coverage begins at 7 p.m.
