WORCESTER, Mass. - Some residents in Worcester said their trash was picked up later than normal.
Worcester Department of Public Works and Parks commissioner, Jay Fink, said they got behind on their routes Friday because of the snowstorm. Fink said the employees who drive the sanitation trucks are the same employees responsible for snow clean up around the city.
Friday's trash pick up route was not finished Friday and continued over the weekend. Fink said with limited staff, the route was not finished until Monday.
"We didn't have a full staff Saturday. Everyone was pretty burnt out over 24 hours of working," Fink said. "I could only get two more trucks out Saturday and that didn't complete the route. On Sunday, again we only had a few trucks reporting."
During Monday's clean up route, the DPW ran into another road block after a problem with one of their trucks.
"The truck rolled out at 7:30 and came back at 8:30. It was down until 2:00 in the afternoon," he said. " Although we finished the week before's route, there was a portion of a Monday route that did not get collected."
By Tuesday, all routes were done and they were back on schedule.
Fink said this doesn't happen often, but they only have so many trucks and employees so sometimes, pick up gets delayed. He said the DPW does their best to inform residents of these delays and recommends calling their customer service line with any questions or concerns.
