NORTH ADAMS, Mass. - For the past few days, students at the McCann Technical School in North Adams have been collecting donations of supplies to be sent to Mayfield, Kentucky to help the town in its recovery efforts following a devastating tornado earlier this month.
Students in the school’s class government organization, Skills U.S.A., came up with the idea last week, and started accepting donations on Friday.
They’re collecting everything from blankets to school supplies, and have a particular need for non-perishable food, personal hygiene products, and cleaning supplies.
They’ve shipped out nearly 150 boxes of supplies already, and the students said they’ve been overwhelmed by the community’s generosity.
“The community response has been crazy,” said Noah Braman, a junior at McCann. “We were not expecting to get much for any of this, but as you can see, there’s definitely a lot of different things people have been bringing in constantly.”
“I didn’t know how much the community would help, so I thought it was just going to be like a school thing,” junior Rosemarie Wood said. “And then the community started to help, so that made us really happy.”
Wednesday is the last day the students are accepting donations. They expect to send more than 200 boxes of supplies down to Kentucky.
