ADAMS, Mass. - The initial bids for the proposed Greylock Glen outdoors and welcome center are in, and the lowest bid came in more than $1 million over the current amount of funding allocated for the project.

The closest bid is just less than $8 million, and comes from Adams-based contractor Souliere & Zepka Construction.

Earlier this year, the state awarded $6.5 million to the town of Adams to build the center, which will include information resources for visitors, spaces for education programs, and a café.

1st Berkshire state representative John Barrett said the bid is actually a few million dollars lower than what they were expecting, and there are several options to close the gap in funding.

“I think the town is working very hard on some applications, federal applications, the economic development administration has a program out there,” said Barrett, who has been involved with developing the project for decades. “It’s also going to require a commitment on the part of the town, and they’re fully prepared to step forward.

“And of course, there’s stimulus money that hasn’t been allocated next year in the state of Massachusetts, hopefully we’ll be able to get some money there. So I’m very confident that we’ll be able to put all the pieces together.”

Barrett also said the funding gap won’t impact the project’s timeline, and the goal is still to have a groundbreaking in the early spring of 2022.
