NORTHBOROUGH, Mass. — The UMass Police Department is stepping up for children in foster care this holiday season.
The department, along with volunteers from UMass Memorial Children’s Medical Center, spent Saturday collecting toys as part of their "Stuff-a-Cruiser" event outside of the Walmart in Northborough.
Holiday shoppers who were buying gifts this weekend were asked to add one more gift to their shopping bags for a child in foster care in the Worcester area. The department was collecting toys for children ranging from infants to teenagers.
"It's fantastic to be a part of this," Sgt. Gregory Markiewicz said. "Just coming out here, volunteering the time, we got the cruiser here, the lights are on, people seem to be giving a lot."
"We're very appreciative to anybody who wants to come down here and donate anything. There's nothing too big, nothing too small," he added. "We have actually gotten some food donated this morning as well. We're going to drop that off at a local shelter. So, whatever you want to give."
In years past, the department said it has received thousands of toys. Those who weren't around to donate Saturday can still visit the UMass Police Department's headquarters on Lake Avenue North in Worcester to drop off toys.
