PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Colonial Theatre is opening its doors for the first time since 2019 this month for a production of Irving Berlin’s "White Christmas."

“To be on a big stage again, with a big band, all the trappings of a big show, it really invigorates us,” said Director Gregg Edelman. “When we started teching the show a couple of days ago, we all were just so excited. We were like kids, playing in a big sandbox.”

This is the first time Berkshire Theatre Group has staged a production of the musical. Despite some COVID-19 restrictions, rehearsals have gone very smoothly and everyone is feeling confident ahead of opening night.

What You Need To Know

  • The Colonial Theatre is reopening for a production of ‘White Christmas’ this month

  • It’s the first production at the theatre in more than two years

  • Proof of vaccination and face masks are required for all attendees

  • Berkshire Theatre Group plans to be indoors at the Colonial and its other venues full time next season

“It’s like a benefit that’s come from COVID, we actually spend more time with each other,” said Edelman. “And I think that’s actually added to the sort of the familial feel of the production overall.”

There will be COVID-19 safety measures in place for the performances. Berkshire Theatre Group Executive Director Nick Paleologos said they’ve upgraded the theatre’s air circulation system, and guests will need to come prepared.

“We’re requiring proof of vaccination, so you have to come with that, either your vaccination card or a photo of it,” said Paleologos. “And also, we’ll be requiring masks for all performances.”

Paleologos said they’ll be keeping an eye on the pandemic over the next few months, but the plan is to return to the Colonial Theatre and their other indoor venues full-time next season.

“We’re very optimistic, cautiously optimistic, that the worst is behind us,” said Paleologos. “Fingers crossed, if all goes well, next year we’ll be completely indoors, and very happy about that.”

Thursday is the first night of previews for the show. It officially opens this Saturday, and runs through December 23.
