WORCESTER, Mass. - An internal committee will be formed soon to begin designing a new fire station on Madison Street, according to a communication from the Worcester Fire Department (WFD).

The new station will replace the Southbridge Street station and will be constructed on the Registry of Motor Vehicles' overflow parking lot across from George’s Coney Island.

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) will be providing the land for the city to build on.

The fire department expects the project to take three years to complete and will cost around $25 million. The new station will be a "clean station," with its living quarters completely separate from the apparatus bay, vehicles and turnout gear.

Depending upon additional funding, the WFD says the project may also include a backup regional communications center. The current backup center is located at the McKeon Road fire station.
