WORCESTER, Mass. - The Holy Cross Crusaders made history as they welcomed Sacred Heart to Fitton Field in the first round of the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) Playoffs.
Holy Cross was trailing 10-6 with less than 30 seconds to go in the game when quarterback Matthew Sluka went deep for wide receiver Jalen Coker and the touchdown. The touchdown put the Crusaders up 13-10. The team went on to secure the first FCS playoff win in program history.
After the game, head coach Bob Chesney said there was a lot the team needed to work on, but also said he was proud of how the team responded with their backs against the wall.
"There's a lot in there that we're going to look back on and say, man, there's a lot of yardage we just gave away," Chesney said. "But I do love the fight. You just sat there in the fourth quarter, and just kind of looked at it and said 'please, don't let anyone stop believing because you're going to win this game.' That's what it felt like on the sideline."
"We definitely take pride in our sideline," Coker said. "We take pride in being in the game no matter what. We're going to stay in the game and we're going to fight until the very last blow of the whistle."
Holy Cross will take on fifth-seeded Villanova in Pennsylvania on Friday, Dec. 3. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
