WORCESTER, Mass. - A national political commentator spoke about the future of American politics to students at Assumption University on Wednesday.

Bill Kristol served as Chief of Staff to Vice President Dan Quayle in the George H. W. Bush administration before turning to writing and political commentary.

During his discussion, Kristol says there is not only a major divide in Washington, D.C., but throughout the United States.

And the issues lie at every level of politics. Kristol says society needs to look at younger generations to change what he calls a polarization in America.

“But I am hopeful that young people, in a way having grown up in this environment, they can see social media for what it is. They know that the person across the classroom from them who comes from a different background, maybe it is a different color, different religion, different views, is a decent person,” Kristol said. “Whereas I kind of think older people are the ones who are self-segregated and made themselves think of their fellow citizens as enemies.”

Kristol believes former President Donald Trump is to blame for the January 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol and for the quote "Loss of respect between citizens."
