PITTSFIELD, Mass. — After years of planning, the Pittsfield Family YMCA was finally able to celebrate the groundbreaking of a massive renovation project Wednesday afternoon.

The project will cost about $12 million. The Y has raised more than half of the money so far, including funding from the state and federal government.

It includes a renovated space that will allow the Y to increase the capacity of their child care program by 33 percent.

The main gym will also be upgraded to include a suspended walking and running track as well as new basketball courts, and the building’s main façade will be rebuilt with windows to let light into the new space.

“The main part of our building, and where our child care is held, was built in 1909, so it is a historic building, and this is the first major renovation that has taken place in this building,” said Jessica Rumlow, CEO of the Berkshire Family YMCA. “It was time to invest in our home, to make sure that we could be a part of this community and providing the important services that we provide throughout all of our opportunities with the Berkshire Family YMCA.”

Some construction has already begun, and the goal is to have the project completed within the next 18 months.
