PITTSFIELD, Mass. - November is ‘Adopt a Senior Pet Month’ at the Berkshire Humane Society, and the shelter is hoping to find new homes for several of their older, furry residents.

Any dog or cat who’s at least 7 is considered a senior. The humane society has about a dozen seniors, including 8-year-old Dennis, and Katie, an 11-year-old terrier mix.

Seniors often have to wait longer in shelters to find new homes. Sometimes it’s because people are concerned about caring for an aging pet, but the humane society does everything they can to make sure all their animals are as healthy as possible before they go up for adoption.

“We do medical workups, we do dentals, we do, for hip issues, we’ll have them see specialists,” said Erin Starsja, assistant shelter manager. “Whatever the animal needs, while it’s in our care, we take care of, and we get that information for you, so that they are starting on the best possible foot and you have the most possible information.”

This week is also ‘Vets for Pets’ week at the humane society, which means from now through Saturday, Nov. 13, all pet adoption fees will be waived for any current or former military service members.
