NORTH ADAMS, Mass. - North Adams mayoral candidate Jennifer Macksey has made history in North Adams on Tuesday.
Macksey won a close mayoral election over challenger Lynette Bond to become the first woman elected as mayor in the city's history.
It was an early call on the tight race as unofficial results were announced around 7:15 p.m. Macksey finished with 1,674 votes (53.1%) against Bond's 1,478 votes (46.9%).
"We spent a lot of time in neighborhoods, we spent a lot of time talking to people, and that's what kind of government people want," Macksey told Spectrum News 1 on Tuesday night. "People want somebody who's going to listen, somebody who's compasionate, and that's what we're going to be. And we're going to work hard and do a lot of work, but it's all about the people of this community."
Macksey says she's going to spend some time with family on Wednesday, and then she wants to meet with outgoing mayor Tom Bernard to get to work and start the transition process.
Spectrum News 1 will have more on this race this evening, including an interview with mayor-elect Macksey.
