WORCESTER, Mass. - Just days before Halloween, a haunted house in Worcester is closed down by the city after multiple building and fire code violations were found.

The Worcester Fire Department (WFD) conducted an inspection this week at the haunted house at SmashIt2 on Canterbury Street.

The WFD says they found expired fire extinguishers, an egress was blocked or not accessible, and multiple flammable partitions hanging from the ceiling. The fire department also questioned the legitimacy of SmashIt2's certificate of occupancy for both SmashIt2 and the haunted house.

A cease and desist was issued by the city of Worcester's Department of Inspectional Services for the Haunted House only. A certificate of occupancy will need to be verified for SmashIt2. The entertainment center features a smash room where people can go in and break everyday household objects to help release stress.

Spectrum News 1 was at SmashIt2 on Wednesday as part of a planned Halloween feature story. The cease and desist was issued on Thursday. The haunted house was scheduled to open Thursday.

On their social media pages, SmashIt2 shared the following: "We are very disappointed to tell you that the city of Worcester has CHOSEN not to let us run our Haunted House this weekend. All ticket sales will be refunded."

A request for more information from SmashIt2 ownership was not immediately returned.
